Tucked away in a corner of Riseely Street in Applecross, Bad Apples Bar has always been pigeonholed in my mind as a place to while away the evenings with a drink or two and a couple of mates. A great place; but not a breakfast place. More recently though, I was coaxed into going along to a bootcamp on a Saturday morning (I could hardly believe it either) at Tompkins Park – and as we all know, you can’t exercise in the morning on the weekend without going to brunch afterwards! It’s simply not done. After a quick google to find somewhere nearby – not wanting to drive too far for fear of passing out in shock after exercising so early in the morning – we discovered that Bad Apples Bar does in fact do breakfast. And a pretty good one at that!
With all sorts of exciting menu options such as french toast with peaches and nut crumble; zuchinni corn bread with poached eggs and grilled corn salsa; and buttermilk blueberry pancakes we took some time to check out the food coming out around us before deciding. It was a lengthy and difficult task but we got there eventually, settling on the pulled pork shoulder, salsa roja, goats cheese, black beans, fried egg and flatbread (me); and the shakshuka – pork & beef meatballs, eggs, tomato sugo, peppers, flatbread (Steph).
The pulled pork was just the way you want it to be, tender, juicy and packed full of flavour. I loved how the rich flavour of the sauce contrasted with the creamy, tangy goats cheese making a wonderful party in my mouth. The flat bread was reminiscent of a savoury doughnut, and was very fresh and light. The fried egg was cooked perfectly with a lovely runny yolk – I really loved the whole dish.
The only disappointment of the morning were the eggs in the shakshuka which I thought were a bit overcooked, and the coffee was also a little on the hot side for my liking but nothing too terrible. Perhaps that’s all the more reason for a cocktail with brunch! I would recommend dropping by if you’re in the area.
