Lay-up Cafe has opened up in the space previously occupied by Dizzy Witch Cafe, a long-time Northbridge breakfast institution. I did quite like Dizzy’s but as one door closes another opens, and Lay-up has revitalised the space and brought with it some exciting new menu options so I’m embracing the change. New year, new favourites!
The menu is a bit quirky, expect combinations such as spiced fried chicken, pork crackle and watermelon, or innovative toppings like jalapeno custard. The coffee is from Blacklist Coffee Roasters, one of my absolute favourites, and I have to that the baristas did the beans justice. Ollie had a cookies and cream smoothie (more like a milkshake) which was pretty damn small for $7.50, but definitely full of flavour.
I ordered the guacamole and pico de gallo with charred sourdough, smoked corn and jalapeno custard, and just for funsies I got a side of bacon. The smoked corn dominated the dish in the best kind of way possible – smoky, fresh and juicy all at the same time and I didn’t want to end! That bacon as well – thick, salty and perfectly cooked, I could go back to eat that alone. I would have like the jalapeno custard to be a bit spicier, but it was pleasant nonetheless. Ollie had baked eggs with feta and chorizo, and I thought the yolks were a little overcooked but he didn’t mind it – each to their own I suppose!
They had a pretty tasty looking display of pastry at the counter that I noticed as we went up to pay – if I hadn’t been so full of bacon and corn I would have seriously considered a sausage roll or brioche donut, but it will have to wait for another day!
