On the corner of Hay and Milligan Street in the CBD lies Tiisch, which I have decided is Perth’s dreamiest cafe. With its bright white walls, punctuated with splashes of greenery hanging from the roof and sprouting from planter boxes, it’s difficult not to be enamoured from the moment you walk in. But if charming interiors aren’t quite enough to win you over, stick around for the food and there won’t be any doubt in your mind. I was so taken with it, I visited for brunch twice in as many weeks!
Nestled on Cambridge Street in the heart of Wembley, Hermosa Cantina has been delighting the people of Perth with its Spanish inspired menu for nigh on mine months now, although its dedicated following would have you believe its been around a lot longer. You wouldn’t expect anything different though, given the people behind the scenes are the very people that operate the legendary Tropico in North Beach. Hermosa has been on my to-do list since it first dipped its feet into the Perth food scene, and the only question in my mind was whether to go for brunch or dinner! As usual though, my love of brunch won out and a few weeks ago there I was; 10am on a Sunday at an overflowing Hermosa Cantina.
Living in Northbridge for the last year has been amazing, but it’s given me skewed perceptions about how far away things really are. Having everything so close can be a blessing and a curse at the same time – there are so many options but it’s gotten to the point where even walking 400 metres to the closest coffee shop has started to seem like an insurmountable task on a Sunday morning! Luckily for me, Koffie Winkel (Dutch for coffee shop) – has recently opened up right around the corner from me. It ticks all the boxes with its beautiful interior, quality coffee and most importantly – fresh, tasty food.
Lay-up Cafe has opened up in the space previously occupied by Dizzy Witch Cafe, a long-time Northbridge breakfast institution. I did quite like Dizzy’s but as one door closes another opens, and Lay-up has revitalised the space and brought with it some exciting new menu options so I’m embracing the change. New year, new favourites!
Perth’s ever burgeoning cafe scene has been bolstered yet again by another top-notch cafe, this time in the increasingly popular suburb of Bayswater. Tbsp has recently opened on the main thoroughfare, King William Street, and it’s serving up some seriously good brunch fare with an Asian influence. Think congee with chicken confit, slow cooked egg, chicken crackling and coriander, or fried chicken sandwich with pickle brined maryland, gochujang slaw and pickled cucumber on a brioche bun, alongside decadent dishes like french toast with whipped honey butter and cereal crunch. Safe to say, I wanted to eat everything on the menu.
Located in the historic State Buildings that once again shines brightly on the corner of Barrack St and St Georges Terrace thanks to some careful restoration work, Petition is a gorgeous new venue that is comprised of three parts, each with their own character – wine bar, kitchen and beer corner. It joins a bunch of other heavy hitters in the same space including Sugar Plum Sweets, the Honeycake Shop, Sue Lewis Chocolatier and the soon to be (and very highly anticipated) Long Chim restaurant. Safe to say you’re pretty spoilt for choice when you’re in the building! In the first few weeks after Petition opened, I dropped by for breakfast a couple of times to check out what was on offer. Tucked away in a corner of Riseely Street in Applecross, Bad Apples Bar has always been pigeonholed in my mind as a place to while away the evenings with a drink or two and a couple of mates. A great place; but not a breakfast place. More recently though, I was coaxed into going along to a bootcamp on a Saturday morning (I could hardly believe it either) at Tompkins Park – and as we all know, you can’t exercise in the morning on the weekend without going to brunch afterwards! It’s simply not done. After a quick google to find somewhere nearby – not wanting to drive too far for fear of passing out in shock after exercising so early in the morning – we discovered that Bad Apples Bar does in fact do breakfast. And a pretty good one at that!
